Assessment and Evaluation:
Standard 3: Candidate uses a variety of assessment tools and practices to plan and evaluate effective reading and writing instruction.
Exemplars: Technical report from practicum; Evaluation report from practicum; Assessment and evaluation reports from practicum course
During my initial practicum, I met with a fifth grade student and performed proven assessments to evaluate her interests and learning levels. Through these reports, I was able to clearly see where my student's strengths were as a learner. I used the identified strengths to design future lessons to support her learning where she struggled with reading comprehension.
During my practicum in my Phonological and Orthographic Language Systems course, I met with the same practicum student who struggles with reading comprehension. I analyzed and reported on the assessment results, directing my information to a variety of audiences. My recommendations included appropriate, in-depth instructional approaches that support learning in reading, writing, and word knowledge. I compiled a detailed report that might be shared with her future teachers for vertical and horizontal alignment.
In creating the final two assessment reports, I used the knowledge from earlier courses as I administered assessments, evaluated the data, and created communication documents to share my findings and recommendations.
These experiences have added to my overall understanding about different types of assessments, their specific purposes, their strengths, and their weaknesses. I am now able to better select, develop, administer, and interpret assessments, both traditional print and electronic, for specific purposes. Using the assessment data, I am able to plan and evaluate instruction. These experiences have also equipped me with the knowledge about how to appropriately communicate assessment results and implications to a variety of audiences.
