Diversity:
Standard 4: Candidate creates and engages their students in literacy practices that develop awareness, understanding, respect, and a valuing of differences in our society.
Exemplars: Lesson plan with personal reflections
During my studies centered on diversity, I learned the importance of developing cultural awareness, understanding, and respect for each individual student and the experiences and cultures they bring into the classroom community. Providing opportunities that allow a student to share their experiences and their culture will develop a sense of pride within themselves as they are heard and valued. This pride in themselves and their culture is a foundation for good mental health. As students learn how to network and learn from one another, they will also improve their interpersonal skills.
I also learned valuable information that can enhance students' comprehension of various types of text. This aided in moving students from their basic goal for reading, to equip them with critical thinking strategies that will deepen their understanding of the text, author, illustrator, and overall subject of the text.
In the lesson plan below, I provided my student with learning opportunities that required her, as a reader, to analyze and evaluate the given text. Going deeper into the text and beyond allowed my student to make meaningful connections, both personally as she discussed her own personal experiences with road trips, and globally as she compared and contrasted peoples' actions and views during that time period to now. The experiences my student had during this lesson helped her become a text critic in her everyday life as we discussed how these same strategies could be used in other subject areas and outside of school. She was able to see the importance and the value of researching the authors and the illustrator to better understand their viewpoint and any possible bias they make have that motivated them to create this historical fiction picture book.
One of the most powerful things I learned during this lesson was the importance of questioning to inspire critical thinking about literacy. My student paused and was puzzled on how to answer my question, "Putting yourself in the gas station attendant’s shoes, what do you think his viewpoint was when Ruth needed to use his restroom? What was he thinking? What was he feeling?" This type of questioning inspired high levels of critical thinking. Her responses were thoughtful and powerful as she shared her feelings about the characters and the subject of the text.
Through these personal learning experiences, I am able to recognize, understand, and value the forms of diversity that exists in our communities and their importance in educating our students to become successful critical thinkers when reading and writing. I am able to provide differentiated instruction that will have a positive impact on students' knowledge and beliefs, as well as developing students' learning skills to become independent learners.
