Curriculum and Instruction:
Standard 2: Candidates use instructional approaches, materials, and an integrated, comprehensive, balanced curriculum to support student learning in reading and writing.
Exemplars: Lesson plans from practicum courses
During my practicums, I worked a great deal with a variety of age groups to assess their learning levels and design instructional plans to meet their specific needs. After assessing my students, I developed and implemented curriculum using materials and technology that provided them learning opportunities that encouraged their active participation throughout the lessons to meet their needs.
In teaching these plans, I found that their reading levels found during my assessments worked perfectly for my students' instructional levels. They were able to read the books with few errors. During the lessons, we focused on a specific text based on their interests that they expressed on the Interest Survey. I also provided them with a choice of text. Both of these initial aspects added to their interesting and engagement in the lessons that would follow. Word work was also another learning component that I integrated within all of the lessons. I used the data from their Words Their Way assessment to scaffold their letter, letter combination, and overall word knowledge. The students were exposed to Focus Words in isolation and embedded within the text. I also provided them learning opportunities using technology and word sorting games to reinforce their learning. We ended each lesson with a writing component that reinforced all lesson objects: reading, word knowledge, and writing.
I used the knowledge I learned during these courses to continue my growth as an educator. I worked with varying age students and administered assessments, evaluated the data, designed lessons to support their learned, and created communication reports to share my findings and recommendations.
Through these experiences I have gained foundational knowledge to design and implement an integrated, comprehensive, and balanced curriculum. I am now better equipped to provide appropriate in-depth instruction for all readers and writers, especially those who struggle with reading and writing.
